Bath Housing is committed to finding housing solutions so people from all backgrounds and income levels can live, work, and thrive. This includes:
- A continued focus on relationships.
- Solution-driven models, including seeding more new projects like the Huse School Apartments and The Uptown, and developing more housing.
- Expanding Comfortably Home.
- Advocacy efforts to raise awareness of housing challenges and promote solutions going forward.
February 23, 2021: Housing Market Summary — Vision & Best Practices and Recommendations for Policy Development
Bath Housing Development Corporation released Housing Market Summary — Vision & Best Practices and Recommendations for Policy Development. The three-part report includes: 1) an analysis of housing needs, 2) a vision statement that outlines values and broad goals for the region, and 3) recommendations for housing policy development. The hope is that the vision will drive future efforts in this region — efforts that may involve the creation of new housing, but that do not stop there.
Prepared by Levine Planning Strategies, the report highlights the mismatch between housing types, sizes, and quality, as well as the needs of those living in the region. Over 40% of households in the region are spending more than 30% of their income on housing. This is compounded by an average 42% increase in rents over the past five years, increases driven by net in-migration to the region.
January 2019: Bath Housing Releases New Strategic Plan
Bath Housing’s strategic plan provides long-term, overarching guidance for the next three to five years and will be used by the board of directors and management team to make decisions regarding resources and direction. It was developed with considerable input from the board and staff, who provided valuable perspective regarding the organization and the needs of current and prospective residents. The strategic plan will be supported by annual action plans developed by the management team and staff to make, track, and report on progress. The strategic plan and annual action plans are reviewed at least annually by the combined boards.

December 2014: Housing Assessment Released
Bath Housing released the Bath Area Housing Assessment. This study was commissioned in order to get a comprehensive look at housing in the greater Bath area. The research relied on statistical information provided by the American Community Survey, the Maine State Housing Authority, Bath Housing, the City of Bath, local sources, and numerous interviews. Bath Housing thanks Bath Savings Institution, Key Bank, The Bank of Maine, and Peoples United Bank for funding the study, and all of those individuals who shared their thoughts with the research team.
Looking Back, Thinking Forward — History of Housing in Bath
Bath Housing and the Patten Free Library recently hosted a discussion about the history of housing in Bath, from WWI forward. The Q&A session after the slideshow inspired robust discussion about the challenges we face as a community regarding issues like housing security, poverty, and economic growth. Understanding market forces of the past — such as burgeoning BIW business and wartime — helps us envision the future. (The visuals begin at about 5:15 minutes.) Speakers are Mary Kate Kwasnik, Archivist and Special Collections Librarian at Patten Free Library, and Bath Housing Executive Director Deb Keller.
